Does This Fancy New $4000 Treadmill Deserve Its Price?
This is the year I’ll finally lose those unwanted pounds and whip myself into shape, and I’m willing to do whatever it takes to get there. Sound familiar? If you’re among the millions of people who’ve resolved to put in the time and effort to improve your health, the up and coming fitness company Peloton wants to help you do it. In early January, they released the Peloton Tread, which is much more than your run-of-the-mill machine. Downside? It costs $4,000. Let's take a look at the specifics of this new machine so you can decide if its worth it.
+ Well-made and surprisingly user-friendly
For four grand, you’d almost expect a treadmill to be engineered by NASA’s finest. While that’s not the case for the Peloton Tread, it’s certainly an impressively built machine. Those who tested it commented on its durability and noted a significant difference between running on it and using an ordinary treadmill. With 59 individual slats in lieu of the usual single belt, a jog on the Peloton provides much more shock absorption and comfort for your joints. It also boasts a huge 32-inch screen and simple, straightforward knobs to control speed and elevation.
+ Not just for running
The Peloton Tread is marketed as the only tool you’ll need to get fit, because you’ll do more than just run on it. For a monthly fee you can have access to a huge variety of live classes, streamed in real time by real instructors from the Peloton headquarters. On the huge screen, your instructor will lead you through full-body workouts that include sprints and endurance training while on the treadmill and strength, resistance, and plyometrics while off of it. You can get a head-to-toe, gym-quality workout every day without leaving the comfort of your own home.
+ Affordable… sort of…
It all sounds great, and you can almost picture your beautiful new self working out on the Tread, until you realize you’d have to take out a small loan to afford it. Peloton is making owning their best fitness gadget a possibility for more everyday folks by offering a monthly payment plan. They’ll let you pay $149 each month for three years with 0 percent APR to own the Tread. Your monthly payment includes the machine with a limited warranty and access to all of Peloton’s live classes.
To buy or not to buy?
If paying more for a new treadmill (albeit a pretty impressive one) than you would for a monthly membership to your nearest gym isn’t up your alley, you might not be ready to give the Tread a try. On the other hand, could a greater investment in your fitness equipment be just the right motivation you need to get serious about improving your health? The choice is up to you.
