ylang ylang essential oil

The ylang ylang essential oil is derived from the fresh flowers of the ylang ylang tree, other known as the Cananga Odorata tree.  These trees are usually found in the rainforests of Asian and South Pacific islands like Indonesia, Philippines, Sumatra, Java, Comoro and Polynesia.

From anti-aging to relaxation, the benefits of topical application and aromatherapy are numerous.  Used first in Asia and neighboring regions, the rich-smelling ylang ylang flower has been used for centuries in perfumes, religious ceremonies, and wedding events.  The oil of this flower quickly became used worldwide in the massage and skin care communities due to its pleasant scent and versatility.

Although there are several grades of ylang ylang essential oil for purchase, ylang ylang extra oil is considered to be the best among other varieties. The purity of the ylang ylang oil can be detected by the scent: the sweeter the smell, the higher the quality.  The oil used in the food industry as a distinct food and drink flavoring, but consuming ylang ylang oil without the supervision of a medical professional is highly discouraged.

Anti-Depressant

In a study conducted in Thailand, ylang ylang oil was found to be helpful in treating stress, anxiety, and depression. It does so by relaxing not only the body, but also the mind. It successfully removes anxiety and chronic stress, giving users a sense of relief from fear, shock, and panic. Ylang ylang oil comes highly recommended to those suffering from nervous breakdowns or acute depression due to accidents, failed relationships, or trauma.

Fights Infections

Ylang ylang oil contains properties that disinfect wounds, prohibit microbial growth, and create skin barriers between bacterial, viral, and fungal infections. Applying this oil directly to wounds or cuts speeds up the healing process by regenerating skin cells and blocking infections from occurring.  When consumed orally, it’s also been found to treat infections in the stomach, intestines, and the urinary tract.  Ylang ylang oil can also treat insect bites, making it an essential part of any first-aid kit.

Hair and Scalp Health

Ylang ylang oil is known for benefiting hair in a number of ways. Because it’s an antibacterial and anti-fungal, this oil can get rid of dandruff and lice when applied directly to the scalp. It can also help prevent hair loss and strengthen hair shafts. This happens because oil stimulates the scalp, controlling the secretion of sebum, which ultimately leads to a healthier scalp.  Thanks to its relaxing and calm scent, using this oil while giving scalp or neck massages increases serenity and relaxation in patients.

Skin Care

The inflammatory properties of this oil make it ideal for treating eczema and other dry skin conditions.  It reduces skin redness by regulating the production of sebum and sealing in moisture, giving skin a softer, plumper appearance.

When applied to open pores, antibacterial properties found in ylang ylang oil soothes skin and prevent bacteria growth that may cause blemishes and acne.
