Dehydrated Skin
Skin, the largest organ of the body, plays an important role in our overall health, yet with our busy lives it’s so easy to neglect its care. Most of us suffer at one point from one skin condition or another. If your skin feels unusually tight, itchy or irritated, or you notice fine lines or flaking and an overall dullness, it may be dehydrated.
Causes of Skin Dehydration
Unlike dry skin, which is a skin type, dehydrated skin results from an absence of moisture, and is a condition to which no one is immune. Oily, normal, and dry skin can all become dehydrated at some point, and may be due to the following causes:
- Weather or Environment: Skin that has been exposed to the sun for long periods of time can quickly become dehydrated. Cold, dry winds and low temperatures can also strip skin of its moisture. Even increased exposure to cooled and heated air in our homes in the summer and winter can be a contributing factor.
- Diet/Lifestyle: It makes sense that if you don’t drink enough water, your skin suffers. Alcohol in excess, as well as certain medications can also cause dehydration.
- Incorrect use of products: Over-washing your skin, especially with soap containing harsh and drying chemicals often does more harm than good.
What can you do?
The good news is that there are ways to help dehydrated skin regain its moisture and look fresh and healthy again! It’s important to maintain a healthy lifestyle, including drinking plenty of water and eating healthy, moisturizing foods like fruits and vegetables, and foods like walnuts, eggs, whole grains and olive oil that contain essential fatty acids.
